origin
inspired by bia hơi culture of meeting friends for fuss-free snacks and cold beer. Serving experimental flavours in the evening and bánh mì and vietnamese coffee by day. Our menu plays on the idea of lai rai - meaning little by little. featuring familiar flavours from the south east with an experimental twist— expanding the notion of “vietnamese fare” in London.
lai rai was founded collaboratively by a team of young creatives, Blair Nguyen and Ivy Vo of Vinaxoa, Joseph Losper and Tomio Shota of house of baby and visual artist AP Nguyen.
spatial design by house of baby
"Whether stopping for a bite en route to a party or settling in for a night out with friends, Lai Rai welcomes guests into the vibrant space designed by house of baby, the spatial design studio and brainchild of Southeast London based multidisciplinary designers Joseph Losper and Tomio Shota. An homage to retro Vietnamese canteens, reinterpreted in a new context. The space features motifs drawn from the cooling utilitarian interiors of cafe’s across Vietnam. Sporting a buttery and youthful palette. Set across two floors, the upstairs hosts larger communal tables under the warm circular glow of a recessed halo light for bigger groups to party into the early hours."
